Where is the ideal location in your garden for a Nest Box?
The best place to locate a nesting box is on a wall, shed, tree or even a fence.

When hanging the nest box make sure that it nest is slightly angled downwards to prevent rain entering the box.

Other considerations are to make sure the box is:
Out of both direct sunlight and the prevailing wind,
Out of reach of inquisitive children,
That it is not too close to your bird feeders as other birds may disturb the nesting pair.
That it is sited in a place where there is not easy access for predators such as Squirrels or Cats
A reasonable distance from other nest boxes in your garden to deter any aggressive behaviour between birds.
The nest box should ideally be at least 1 metre off the ground but not higher than 5 meters.

Do consider that you will have to occasionally inspect the nest box but only when the box is not being used to ensure it can be maintained and cleaned.

When is the best time to put up a new nest box?
Traditionally the time to put up a nest boxes has been early spring, so that the garden birds can find their new home before breeding which is why National Nest Box Week starts on St Valentine’s Day - 14th February.

However, many birds are looking for nest boxes prior to this and also if we have a harsh winter then the boxes may be used to roost in, as this will provide some protection from the elements.

So, the sooner you put a nest box up in your garden the better.

Hints & Tips:
When you put a nest box up, be patient as it may be several years before a nesting pair use it. If the box has not been used in 3 years, do consider relocating it elsewhere in your garden.

It is against the law to disturb nesting birds between the 1st February and 31st August each year.

Ensure you clean your nest box out of season, it is recommended your wear disposable gloves & a dust mask as old nest material may contain dust, fungi or parasites such as fleas, lice or ticks.

It is recommended you do not use a nest box with a perch outside the entrance hole as this can provided a perch for squirrels to grip while trying to gnaw their way into the nest box.
